Soc Trang Field Measurement Campaign for Coastal Monitoring

June 14, 2025

Soc Trang Province, Vietnam

Researchers from Thuyloi University and ICOE conducted a field measurement campaign in Soc Trang Province to collect hydrodynamic and environmental data, including waves, water levels, suspended sediments, and mangrove biomass, in support of coastal monitoring and Living Lab research.

Researchers from Thuyloi University and the Institute of Coastal and Offshore Engineering (ICOE) carried out a comprehensive field measurement campaign in Soc Trang Province to collect key environmental and hydrodynamic data for coastal monitoring and ecosystem research.

The campaign included the deployment and transportation of wave buoys for nearshore wave observations, the installation of wave gauges to continuously monitor wave conditions and water levels within mangrove forests, and the collection of suspended sediment samples at estuary and canal mouths. In addition, the research team conducted field surveys to assess mangrove biomass, providing valuable information for evaluating ecosystem health and supporting nature-based coastal protection strategies.

The collected data contribute to ongoing research on coastal dynamics, sediment transport, and mangrove restoration while supporting the long-term monitoring objectives of the Mekong Living Lab.

Highlights

  • Deployment of nearshore wave buoys for field observations.

  • Installation of wave and water-level gauges within mangrove forests.

  • Collection of suspended sediment samples at estuaries and canal mouths.

  • Field assessment of mangrove biomass and coastal environmental conditions.
