ICOE AND TU DELFT CONDUCT FIELD SURVEY ALONG THE COAST OF THE MEKONG DELTA
From 8 to 12 October 2026, researchers from the Institute of Coastal and Offshore Engineering (ICOE), together with five master’s students from Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), the Netherlands, conducted a field survey along the eastern coast of the Mekong Delta, Vietnam.
The survey aimed to investigate the current conditions of coastal protection structures, examine mangrove ecosystems, and document coastal erosion and shoreline changes at selected coastal sites. The team visited various types of coastal protection measures, including revetments, low-crested and submerged breakwaters, geotextile tube structures, and other coastal defense systems, to better understand their functions and performance under the region’s natural conditions.
In addition to field observations, the team installed, tested, and operated several hydrodynamic and oceanographic monitoring instruments to collect data on waves, currents, water levels, and sediment transport. These measurements will contribute to a better understanding of coastal hydrodynamic processes and sediment dynamics, as well as the interactions between coastal protection structures, shoreline evolution, and mangrove ecosystems.
The field survey provided a valuable opportunity for researchers and master’s students to gain practical experience, exchange technical knowledge, and strengthen research collaboration in coastal engineering and coastal protection. The information and field data collected will support further studies on coastal erosion, coastal ecosystem management, and the development of appropriate and sustainable coastal protection solutions for the Mekong Delta.
