Mekong Delta Living Lab Researchers Presented Their Research at the EGU General Assembly 2026 in Vienna, Austria

From 3–8 May 2026, researchers from the Mekong Delta Living Lab project participated in and presented their research at the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2026, held in Vienna, Austria.

The European Geosciences Union (EGU) is Europe's leading scientific organization for Earth, planetary, and space sciences, representing approximately 20,000 members worldwide. Through scientific publications, conferences, education, and outreach activities, EGU promotes both fundamental and applied research to address major environmental and societal challenges. The annual EGU General Assembly is Europe's largest geoscience conference, attracting more than 21,000 scientists and featuring thousands of presentations covering natural hazards, ocean sciences, hydrology, climate science, geophysics, energy, and Earth resources.



During the conference, researchers from the Mekong Delta Living Lab project presented three studies focusing on coastal hydrodynamics, mangrove ecosystems, and Nature-based Solutions for the Mekong Delta.


On 6 May 2026, Dr. Phan Manh Hung presented: "On the importance of recognizing the large regional and temporal variability of coastal mangrove processes along the Mekong Deltaic Coast."

On 7 May 2026, Dr. Phan Khanh Linh presented: "From Physical Experiments to 1D and 2D Numerical Models of Wave Propagation in Mangrove Forests: Implications for Nature-Based Solutions in the Mekong Delta." On the same day, Dr. Truong Hong Son presented: "Mixing Processes at the Mangrove Forest Edge under Coastal Squeeze: Insights from PIV and 2DH Modelling for Nature-Based Restoration."

These presentations highlighted recent advances in understanding coastal hydrodynamic processes, wave attenuation in mangrove forests, vegetation–flow interactions, and the application of Nature-based Solutions to enhance coastal resilience in the Mekong Delta.

In addition to the scientific sessions, the research team engaged in discussions and networking activities with researchers from Switzerland, China, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Germany. These exchanges created valuable opportunities for future international collaboration in coastal engineering, mangrove restoration, numerical modelling, and climate change adaptation.


Participation in the EGU General Assembly 2026 provided an important platform for sharing the scientific achievements of the Mekong Delta Living Lab project with the international research community while strengthening partnerships for future collaborative research.


Some activities involve exchanging and connecting international scientists.
